Planer Thicknessers have become a stalwart of the modern workshop, flying through jobs in minutes that took hours with a jack plane. There are various types on the market ranging in price from £120 to upwards of £4,000 for the bigger workshop machines. The rotary cutting blades make thousands of cuts per minute to create a clean, planed surface. The Triton TPT125 317mm (12.5 inches) is a quality bench top machine for a reasonable price - I got mine from Amazon for £259. There are much more expensive options by other top brands but Triton Tools are a well respected global brand, and this tool had great reviews on Amazon (4.6 out 5 from 109 reviews) and on Screwfix (4.5 out 5 from 31 reviews).

what i didn’t like…
Some of the smaller items are loose in a bigger bag & could easily be thrown away
I wonder with intense usage if the crank to move the unit up & down will have threading issues in the future - this is very picky I know
what i like…
The build quality is very good, OK its got a plastic cover, but it’s robust & very tough
The instructions are clear, well layed out & I had the machine up & running in less than 10 minutes
The hex head screw driver provided is convienently located on the machine, easily detached & easier to use than an allan key
The handles to move the unit are really good - useful for a 30kg machine!
The noise levels are much better than expected
I would highly recommend this machine, it’s easy to set-up, easier to use & the accessories are useful and well positioned - the manufacturer is well respected, has a good warranty programme & product registration is simple. I’ve used it extensively in a few weeks, planing pallet wood to a clean finish, with minimal sniping or tear-out. I will come back & review the blade replacement process when that comes time…
