CARING FOR YOUR FURNITURE…

Your new furniture will hopefully last you a lifetime & be given to future generations! It will need a bit of care & maintenace in order to be properly looked after. Taking this extra bit of care will mean you can prolong its life & longevity.

Your piece may already show natural colour variation, knots, shakes, and variation in the grain’s pattern. This is very much part of the natural charm of the materials we use.

Solid wood will continue to move and adjust depending on its surroundings. Metals can patina over time with changes in environement. You can decide to let pieces age gracefully, showing the signs of use & enjoyment, or if you want to keep them looking fresh & as good as new…here are our tips for looking after your furniture pieces…

Daily/Regular Cleaning

The wood in your piece has likely been finished with a Hard Wax Oil (unless stated during the order process). These types of finishes are designed to be used and cared for in the home environment.

We would always recommend using placemats and coasters to protect the finish from heat and moisture (e.g. condensation and spills). This is particularly important within the first few weeks as the finish may not have fully cured. During this period moisture from cleaning products or damp cloths should be avoided.

Simple furniture polish is fine to use on our wood surfaces. However, specialist wood cleaners are our recommended cleaning products for all solid wood surfaces. We would recommend using Fiddes Wood Surface Cleaner

Wood is a porous material so will naturally try to absorb liquid. The finish is water resistant (and not waterproof) so we would suggest wiping up any spills straight away. This is particularly important if the liquid is known for staining e.g. coffee, red wine, oil, vinegar.

Metal components should be cleaned using a soft dry cloth to wipe away any dust or dirt. Never use abrasive sponges or scourers on the surface. Any moisture should be immediately dried off of the surface to guard against rust or discolouration.

Maintenance

We recommend that solid wood surfaces are refreshed with a fresh coat of tinted hard wax oil or clear oil every 12-24 months dependent on usage. For example a dining table would benefit from annual maintenance, but a sideboard with low traffic would probably be fine with every 2 years.

You will have been informed what finish we used during the sales & delivery process, typically one of these products depedent on the timber:

All these products should be applied to a clean, dust free surface. We recommend using a Tack Cloth to clean the surface before applying the oil.

Stir the product well, then apply lightly with a lint-free cloth or brush, removing any excess with a clean/dry cloth or blue workshop towel.

Leave the finish to cure for a few hours, ideally overnight before using again.

For repairs we recommend getting in touch so we can advise the best options or coming to make a repair ourselves.
